What is Biodiv-Net / Afribes offering now

and what will do in a next future?

Afribes is still in a development phase. The first tools proposed in December 2009 are a voluntary directory to drop and share references of publications, books, articles, conference proceedings, job opportunities, propose thematic surveys or discussion on the forum; and a search engine that will access to local and international databases, websites, scientific documents.

At present more than 200 participants enrolled in the Afribes network but a lot of work is still needed to have a successful network. Even if a good indicator is the number of members involved, we give a key priority to the interactions among all the members. Indeed, the issue of animation of this network is crucial in order to show the liveliness of the network and to be able to respond to members’ requests in term of development of the network (new characteristics and tools etc….)

For 2010, Afribes will be presented in several African, European and international meetings (IAALD, CBD COP and SBSTTA, IPBES Africa meetings in Gabon…) and to institutional partners (GBIF, CBD, …) in order to promote the network, present its functions and increase its visibility.

At the same time Biodiv-Net intend to:

Keep on and support the development of social networks on biodiversity, their hardware and freeware development

Propose the development of Biodiversity social networks in others geographic place -local authorities, countries (Gabon, Madagascar), Mediterranean basin, South east of Asia (Mongolia)- and on specific issues linked to biodiversity (health, environmental law...)
